Lake Chad's Desertification Process
Since the 5000 BC the lake has been shrinking so very slowly, right up until 1963 where it had become 0.2 of it's original size. In June 1966 to January 1973, the surface area of Lake Chad had shrunk from 22,772 km2 to 15,400 km2. In 1982, the lake’s surface area was estimated to be about 2,276 km2. In February 1994 the lak was measured to be at just 1,756 km2. Between 1953 to 1979, irrigation had only a moderate impact on Lake Chad's ecosystem. However between 1983 and 1994 irrigation had increased four-fold. About 50% of the decrease in the lake’s size since the 1960s is caused by human water use, with the rest caused by the shifting of climate patterns.

What Has Led to The Lakes Shrinking
There are three main things that have led to the Lakes shrinking, the first one is over grazing , farmers have let animals in one particular are for too long so that has caused the vegetation in that area to be completely consumed. The second cause is over-cultivation where the farmers have used a farmland area to the point where the productivity eventually falls due to soil exhaustion and land degradation. The third cause is deforestation, when the trees have been chopped down and used for fossil fuels and energy,

How has the Biome Been Affected
Before Lake Chad's desertification and shrinking it was originally a large wetland and a savannah. However, due to live stock deaths, and the reduction of the water in Lake Chad it has become a smaller wetland and majority of it is a desert.

How Have People Been Affected
The people that live in Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon have been affected socially because of the poverty and unemployment due to the lack of insufficient amount of water in the Lake, so farmers don't have a lot of water for their crops and the water level is becoming so dim that it is making it harder to fish. |
How Has Agriculture Been Affected
Since there is not enough water in the lake for farmers, fishermen and livestock, people are moving away from the lake because of that and the huge amount of Poverty that has risen, so there is a very few workers around Lake chad.
